Directed by Alex Gibney (“Enron: The Smartest Guy in the Room“), this documentary makes good use of expert sources as well as tells the story of what happened in the words of the soldiers as well as the prisoners. This drama by Romanian director Cristian Mongiu chronicles a woman’s quest to help her best friend acquire an illegal abortion in 1980s Romania, when abortion and contraception were both illegal. This powerful film won the top prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, beating out No Country for Old Men, much to many’s surprise.
